In a few years, Airflow has become a standard in the data engineering field.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April 2016, the project joined the <\/span><b>official Apache Foundation incubator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It continues its development and receives the status of a &#8220;top-level&#8221; project in January 2019. Almost two years later, in December 2020, Airflow has more than 1400 contributors, 11,230 contributions, and 19,800 stars on GitHub.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Airflow 2.0 version is available since December 17, 2020, and brings new features and many improvements. Here are the main ones.<\/span><\/p><h5><b>The DAGs<\/b><\/h5><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Airflow, pipelines are represented as DAGs (Directed Acyclic Graphs) defined in <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/datascientest.com\/en\/python-or-r-which-to-choose\">Python<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A graph is a structure composed of objects (nodes) in which certain pairs of objects are related. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are &#8220;Directed&#8221;, which means that the edges of the graph are <\/span><b>oriented<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that they, therefore, represent <\/span><b>unidirectional links<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8220;Acyclic&#8221;, because the graphs do not have a circuit. This means that node B downstream of node A cannot also be upstream of node A. This ensures that pipelines do not have infinite loops.<\/span><\/p><h5><b>Tasks<\/b><\/h5><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each node in a DAG represents a task. It is a representation of a <\/span><b>sequence of tasks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be performed, which constitutes a pipeline. The represented jobs are defined by the operators<\/span><\/p><h5><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The operators<\/span><\/h5><p>The operators are the building blocks of the Airflow platform. They are used to\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">determine the work done<\/span>. It can be an individual task (node of a DAG), defining how the task will be executed.<\/p><p>The DAG ensures that the operators are\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">scheduled and executed<\/span>\u00a0in a specific order, while the operators define the jobs to be executed at each step of the process.<\/p><p>There are three main categories of operators. First, action operators perform a function. Examples are the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">PythonOperator<\/span>\u00a0or the<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u00a0BashOperator<\/span>.<\/p><p>Transfer operators allow the transfer of data from a source to a destination, like the\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">S3ToRedshiftOperator<\/span>.<\/p><p>Finally, the Sensors allow waiting for a condition to be verified. For example, the FileSensor operator can be used to wait for a file to be present in a given folder, before continuing the execution of the pipeline.<\/p><p>Each operator is defined individually. They are stored in an encrypted metadata database associated with the current Airflow instance.<\/span><\/p><h5><b>Plugins<\/b><\/h5><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airflow plugins can be described as a <\/span><b>combination of Hooks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Operators.
