In short, it is where the data comes from.<\/p><p>The data source can be both the place where the data was originally created and the place where it was added. For example, as part of a digital transformation, many companies are digitising their data. The place where they are stored electronically then becomes the source of this data.<\/p><p>In the same spirit, <strong>data sources<\/strong> can be digital (for the most part) or paper-based.<\/p><p>Whatever the case, the idea is to enable users to access and exploit the data from this source.<\/p><p>And they can do this in a variety of ways, since the data source can take different forms, such as a database, a flat file, an inventory table, <a href=\"https:\/\/datascientest.com\/en\/web-scraping-unveiled-your-comprehensive-guide-to-data-extraction\">web scraping<\/a>, streaming data, physical archives, etc.<\/p><p>With the <a href=\"https:\/\/datascientest.com\/en\/big-data-definition-technologies-uses-and-training\">development of Big Data<\/a> and new technologies, these different formats are constantly evolving, making data sources ever more complex. But this depends above all on the context.<\/p><p><strong>Data sources<\/strong> and databases are often confused. Both refer to the place where information is stored. But the database is only one form of data source (admittedly the most widespread).<\/p><p>It is also possible to think of the data source as a data provider,<strong> the use of self-service data,<\/strong> such as Excel, <a href=\"https:\/\/datascientest.com\/en\/what-is-tableau\">Tableau<\/a> or Power BI, a type of computer storage, accounting, an economic indicator, etc.<\/p><p>In the same spirit, data source and DSN (data source name) should not be confused. <strong>DSNs describe a connection to a data source.<\/strong><\/p><p>In some cases, the DSN is the same as the corresponding database or file, but this is not automatic.
