Today, companies have become aware of the quantities but above all of the potential that data represents. Managing it is therefore all the more important to ensure that it is scientifically sound and used, fully documented and transparent, and easily accessible and usable.
This high level of well-defined requirements has increased the need to become more professional in management activities, which favors rigorous verification and declaration of conformity. As a result, many new professions have emerged: data analyst, data scientist, data engineer . However, these professions could not exist without a key element: data. However, data is not free of errors, ills or manipulations; someone has to take care of its management, the Data Management referent.
The data management referent manages data assets to improve reusability, accessibility and quality. They approve data naming standards, develop consistent data definitions, and document business rules. The result is the unification of enterprise data.
The mission of the Data Management Referent is to ensure the integration of the following data:
- Naming standards
- Definitions of Entities and Terms of Reference
- Specification of business rules
- Specification of computing methods
- Criteria for data quality– and data retention
- Data sourcing
- Data Security Specification
Such an integrated view forms the basis for the shared data that is essential in data warehouses.
The Data Management referent must understand the technical issues of data integration.
He or she is generally exposed to the business world while modeling business rules, entities, and data attributes.
But how do you recognize a talented data management consultant? Technical skills are essential, but interpersonal skills, which are often overlooked, are just as important. For example, this job requires someone with the business knowledge to facilitate agreements between groups and reach consensus where possible.
- Designate a manager within the Data Stewards team who will be responsible for overseeing each of the main data domains.
- Divided into teams, the Data Stewards will be responsible for resolving data integration issues in their own domain. The results will then be passed on to data administrators and databases and integrated into the company’s data models.
- Just as there is a Data Architect for most data administration functions, there should also be a manager with data management training who determines and controls everyone’s domain.
The roles and responsibilities of the Data Management referent may vary according to the maturity of the data program within the company.
Those who are new to the organization are more focused on tasks to consolidate data from platforms and establish processes to best manage the data.
Those in companies with more mature data programs tend to focus on higher value-added tasks (data quality assurance, standards compliance, etc.).
In general, the missions of the Data Management referent are the following:
- to guarantee the quality of the data collected and used by the company
- to resolve data integration issues
- to ensure data security and manage regulatory risks
- to document data, calculations, syntheses…
- to update the rules governing access to data (confidentiality)
In summary, Data Management referents are responsible for the management and quality of all data within the enterprise and ensure that the data rules established by the data governance program are respected. By acting as intermediaries between information systems and users, they are probably the most sought-after profiles today.
Define Data Governance processes and their implementation
- Establishing Data Contracts and policies and ensuring that these are respected within the company.
- Update data mapping (collection, storage, processing, destination)
- Ensuring legal compliance and security of data manipulation
Quality control and detection of irregularities
- Maintain data quality (data cleansing, quality control, coordination of improvement actions, etc.).
- Develop monitoring indicators and create reports, KPIs to ensure the optimal functioning of data processes.
Improve data and its accessibility
- Establish a diagnosis on the data assets (value, quality)
- Educate the different teams on how to use the data so that they can take ownership and monitor their usage
Continuous control allowing to validate the blocks of competences
Oral defense before a jury of professionals.
- To obtain the certification, all blocks of skills must be validated. Possibility of validation by skill block.
The acquisition of competences is carried out through various practical work carried out in a dedicated environment and by the implementation of a continuous knowledge control.
First steps :
To follow a data management training, it is necessary to have at least a Bac+1 or 2 in mathematics or sciences. As this job involves a fairly significant part of information transmission, notions of communication and marketing will also be an advantage for the person wishing to train.
Even if the training is centered on data organization and management, mathematics remains an essential component for a good understanding of the logical principles that will be addressed. People with prior knowledge of certain statistical principles (expectation, variance, algebra…) will advance more quickly in the training and will be able to approach new concepts more easily.
These trainings are also accessible to anyone with a scientific profession, the professional qualifications being generally sufficient to develop those essential to the Data Management professions.
- A precise vision of Big Data, its challenges, its environment and its main technologies and solutions
- An understanding of the importance of data management in the company’s strategy
- A control of the temporal functioning of the data and a guarantee of its quality.
- Know-how in aligning the different business lines with the data lifecycle
- The ability to transform large volumes of different data into useful and actionable information.

Once you have registered on the website, we will contact you to introduce you to DataScientest and its offers, and to discuss your background and your wishes so that they coincide with our training courses.
Then, a technical positioning test, essentially mathematics of probability/statistics and quite basic algebra, is submitted to you (level L1/L2 mathematics). This test does not sanction you in any way and only serves to position you. Until now, you are not committed to DataScientest and may, at your convenience, not pursue your project.
The registration phase will start only after confirmation of your project. From then on, our teams will take care of organizing your Data Steward training.

Career: which post-training perspectives?
Mastering data has proven to be very useful in certain professions such as researchers and actuaries. Data science is of enormous benefit to them, as it is to the vast majority of quantitative professions involving statistics. Indeed, thanks to data, new doors and opportunities are open to them.
The Data Management consultant, after his Data Management training or after having practiced his profession, can become a data analyst or even a data scientist. To do so, a training of several months using the Machine Learning block is necessary and also available on DataScientest.com or on other platforms.
Otherwise, the Data Steward position can lead to other careers such as that of Chief Data Quality Officer.
A junior Data Steward can expect to earn between 30 and 35k € per year. After 8-10 years of experience, he will be promoted to Senior and will see his salary increase to 45 and 50k € per year. However, it is necessary to take into account the presence of disparities between sectors and companies.
For this new Data Management training, we do not yet have any data on the professional integration of learners at the end of the course. Indeed the first Data Management cohort starts in January 2021.
